Although the cost of living is quite high, the city is part of a vibrant metropolitan area brimming with activities as well as services and programs that support older adults. While the area is known for its overcast, rainy weather, summers are surprisingly mild and dry, ideal for enjoying the many parks and places of natural beauty. Seattle also boasts dozens of museums and eclectic shopping and dining options. And despite its higher costs, Washington does let retirees keep their Social Security and retirement earnings tax-free.

Nearby states have lower costs: Idaho’s average of $3,675 is significantly less, and Montana, at $4,213, is also considerably lower. Oregon’s costs of $4,659 are the most similar to Shoreline’s, averaging roughly $300 less per month.
Shoreline’s assisted living care costs are moderately priced compared with other Washington cities. Costs are highest in Seattle, averaging $6,750 per month. Olympia is most comparable, at $5,138 per month. North, in Bellingham, prices drop to $4,738, and Walla Walla, in the southeast corner of the state, has the lowest costs at $3,800 per month. Assisted living in Wenatchee, at $5,473 per month, is moderately higher than in Shoreline.
The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services provides a number of Home and Community Based Waivers, and several of these may provide some services to those in assisted living communities. Services are meant to supplement what is offered by Medicaid, and qualifying for any of these waivers is also contingent upon qualifying for Medicaid.

Hopelink Transportation | (425) 869-6000 | Serving seniors in King County, Hopelink Transportation provides transportation to and from emergency and non-emergency medical appointments. Their DART transit, a public bus service, can pick up or drop off passengers outside regular routes, and Medicaid Transportation drives Medicaid recipients to and from their medical appointments. Hopelink also coordinates trips through the Community Van, providing shared rides throughout the week to various popular spots. |

In addition to assistance applying for state or federal benefits, the King County Veterans Program connects individuals with mental health resources and various social groups.
