Assisted living in Oswego costs an average of $4,703, which is $97 less than the state average for New York of $4,800. The national average cost for similar services is $4,300 with a wide variation by city and state. Seniors tend to pay much more for assisted living in nearby states, such as New Jersey, where the average cost of care is $6,650 a month. Likewise, seniors in assisted living communities in Connecticut and Vermont also pay more than Oswego at $6,300 and $5,310 a month respectively. Of all the nearby states, only Pennsylvania has a lower monthly average cost at just $3,955.
The cost of assisted living in other New York communities varies somewhat. New York City seniors pay an average of $5,991 a month for assisted living, while Rochester seniors pay $5,180 on average. Albany and Poughkeepsie are among the closest in price to Oswego at $4,800 and $5,154 a month respectively. Ithaca is a major outlier for price with assisted living costing an average of $13,500 a month. Glens Falls’ prices are somewhat lower than in Oswego at just $4,235 a month.

New York State’s Assisted Living Program (ALP) provides placement and financial assistance for seniors who need the level of care an assisted living community provides but lack the resources to pay for it. While 85% of the program’s participants qualify for Medicaid, enrollment in the low-income health program is not a requirement. The ALP provides many services for eligible beneficiaries, including personal care, room, board, housekeeping and home health services. It also pays for personal emergency response equipment, nursing care, therapy, medical supplies and case management services provided by a registered nurse.

This service supports seniors in two ways by serving congregate meals at the senior center on a daily basis and delivering fresh meals to seniors’ homes, including those who live in residential senior care communities. Seniors who self-report earning more than 185% of the federal poverty rate are requested to pay $5.99 a meal on a voluntary basis, while those who earn less are encouraged to contribute $4. No senior can be refused service for lack of payment. |
