Incorporated in 1999, Oakley is the youngest city in Contra Costa County. This thriving suburban community is located in San Francisco’s East Bay Area between Antioch, Brentwood and Discovery Bay. Although seniors represent less than 10% of the city’s 42,543 residents, the area offers several amenities for older adults. Oakley has direct access to several greenways for walking, biking and outdoor recreation. Based on a median monthly cost of $4,500, seniors pay $200 more than the national average and $500 less than the state median. Oregon residents pay about $159 more per month, although other neighboring states offer a better value. Seniors in Arizona pay $600 less, and Nevada residents save about $900 per month compared to Oakley.
Oakley’s assisted living prices are about average when compared to other major metropolitan areas. Cities with cheaper rates include Modesto at $4,000 per month and Stockton at $3,500. Rates in Los Angeles are on par with the state median of $5,000. Closer to home, monthly price differences increase considerably. Assisted living in Sacramento costs an average of $5,395 per month. Seniors in Santa Rosa pay an average of $6,000 per month, followed by San Francisco with an increase to $6,100. The difference grows significantly in Napa, where assisted living costs $6,250 per month.
Oakley residents who require a nursing home level of care and need help paying for these services may qualify for the state’s Assisted Living Waiver. This Medicaid program is available to adults aged 21 or older who meet medical and financial eligibility requirements and are willing to live in an assisted living facility in Contra Costa County or another designated area as an alternative.
