According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020 Hilton Head averages $5,475 a month. That’s about $1,500 above the state average of $3,988 and almost $1,200 above the national average of $4,300 a month. Of nearby states, only Tennessee has a higher cost at $4,039 a month. Georgia is $3,500 a month, Florida costs $3,700 a month and North Carolina averages $3,800 a month, all less expensive.
The lowest cost of assisted living in South Carolina can be found in Sumter at $2,200 a month. Greenville is next at $2,800 a month, and Charleston averages $3,600 a month. Spartanburg costs $4,095 a month, while seniors in Florence pay $4,163 a month. Columbia averages $4,299 a month. Myrtle Beach also has one of the highest assisted living costs, averaging $4,620 a month.
The Optional State Supplemental Program (OSS) provides financial assistance to low-income seniors in an assisted living facility. Funds can be used to offset costs for room and board and meals. Assistance also includes a small monthly stipend for purchasing personal items. Seniors must be at least 65, eligible for Medicaid and meet limits on income and assets.

Lowcountry Area Agency on Aging (AAA) | (843) 473-3990 | The mission of the Lowcountry AAA is to identify the needs of seniors in the region and what services are available. The agency works with other organizations to make sure these services meet the needs of the senior population. Programs operated by the Lowcountry AAA include the Family Caregiver Support Program, free legal assistance for seniors aged 60 and older, insurance counseling and information and referral services. |
Long-Term Care Resident Advocacy | (843) 473-3955 | The Lowcountry Long-Term Care Ombudsman Team advocates for seniors who reside in assisted living and long-term care facilities. The team monitors the care available to seniors in each facility and how it affects each resident’s quality of life. The team investigates complaints made by residents or their loved ones, whether those complaints concern the facility or other residents. The team works with seniors and the facility to resolve any issues. The LTC team also educates the greater public about the rights of seniors in assisted living and long-term care facilities. |
South Carolina State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) | (800) 868-9095 | The South Carolina SHIP offers seniors free, unbiased counseling about their health care options, including Medicaid, Medicare, Medicare Advantage Programs, Medicaid Part D drug plans and Medigap. The counselors also assist with billing problems, help seniors appeal health care decisions and help them find and enroll in low-income assistance programs. The one-on-one counseling is entirely confidential. None of the volunteers work for health care organizations and will never try to sell a senior any plan. |
When a resident is admitted to an assisted living facility in South Carolina, they are provided with a schedule of fees and services, the resident’s Bill of Rights, the facility’s grievance policy and contact information for the local ombudsman program. The facility and the patient will sign an agreement that outlines the scope of care and other needs of the patient.
