She spoke in calming tones, her kindness pouring out to the voice on the other end of the line. While not her normal order of business of fielding and directing phone inquiries, this woman took the time to assist each resident who called her from within the facility. Willow Lake staff clearly views residents as the individuals they are, with a past, a profession—a life before assisted living. The receptionist is no exception in her obvious care and respect for residents who have questions or just might want the soft reassurance of a kind ear.
In fact, our guide explained that the programs here are developed to satisfy residents’ varying needs, so that each one may “continue to be their own person.” This philosophy is echoed in the wide range of activities, which includes a garden club, current events discussions, trivia games, arts and crafts, spelling bees, exercise and movie viewing. A full kitchen is available for baking activities. Town meetings, birthday parties and veterans’ coffee meetings, where community veterans meet with residents who served in World War II, are unique opportunities to socialize. Religious services include Catholic mass, Shabbat services and bible study. A men’s club room is complete with a pool table, and several other community rooms feature great reading material. Of course, scheduled field trips to local malls and restaurants are popular options, too.
Willow Lake is a modern building constructed of earth-toned stucco and brick. A large portico covers the main entrance, flanked by graceful flamingo sculptures. Seating areas provide lovely views of mature trees and attractive potted plants. There are patios in the front and back of the facility, and residents were relaxing in both areas at the time of our visit. Beautiful landscaping adds to the natural ambience.
Residents have an outstanding view of nearby Willow Lake from the three-story high dining room, and can often see people paddling boats on the water. Inside, fresh flowers decorate linen-covered tables. The food is excellent—at all meals, a team of chefs is on duty, most of whom have graduated from prestigious culinary colleges. Prepared from scratch, dinner selections include such mouthwatering options as veal marsala, lasagna, pork chops, knockwurst and chicken croquettes. Fresh vegetables are purchased from a local farmer’s market, and kosher meals are available upon request.
Resident rooms are nicely sized and homey—desks, lovely Queen Anne chairs and lock boxes are several outstanding features. Residents may even choose what color they’d like their rooms to be painted. We were thrilled to talk to two seniors, who at 101 and 103 years old, are happy and longtime residents of Willow Lake.
