Sunrise at Mill Basin

The charm of this outfit is evident from the onset. A wraparound porch complete with rocking chairs hugs the gabled building. The property, which sits about forty feet back from the quiet dead-end street, overlooks the water of Mill Basin. Benches and flowerpots frame the entrance. The quaint bed-and-breakfast feel is maintained by the soothing green and beige tones that envelop the interior. One side of the lobby doubles as a library, while the other is a sunroom, with windows on three sides, skylights and white wicker furnishings. The parlor is pure elegance with its fireplace, baby grand piano and smattering of chairs and couches in maroon and beige. The studios are small but cheerful, with green carpeting and pale yellow walls. A few lucky residents enjoy water views.

The main dining room, bordered by a smaller dining room and bistro complete with a jukebox, features a beautiful wood breakfront. The food is straightforward American fare, with dinner entrées like roast chicken and prime rib. Beer and wine are available. Entrée choices are displayed at the entrance to the dining room before each meal.

Outside, the back patio extends toward the water. The adjacent concrete walkway has wood benches and shaded porches with rocking chairs. Physical activities include dancing, stretching and walking. Arts and crafts, trivia and word and table games all help sharpen the mind. Field trips to local stores and restaurants almost are as popular as trips to the flea market and mall. Singers and musicians visit often. Monthly parties with themes such as “Celebrate Cultural Diversity” help keep the residents socializing. On our visit, we were struck by the number of residents who were mingling or visiting with family members. Staff and residents seem to have a good rapport.
