Fifty acres carved with paved walkways surround this facility, which houses both assisted living and skilled nursing. The building’s formation speaks to its purpose: a 1920s-era chapel is at the center of all the wings. The chapel is truly breathtaking due to its size and beauty. Religious icons and crosses are dispersed throughout the entire building’s interior. Multiple windows dip the facility in a bath of natural light. A humongous 225-gallon aquarium is home to a variety of tropical fish. The community kitchen’s recent remodel resulted in new cabinetry and modern appliances. Residents’ rooms are furnished with durable wood pieces, including a chest of drawers.
The locked Alzheimer’s and dementia unit is similar in décor to the rest of the facility. Residents here wear ankle or wrist monitors to help curb wandering. The unit also has its own dining room, paved patio and raised garden. The community room is popular, thanks to a big-screen TV, DVD and VHS players, self-rising chairs and a piano. Memory boxes are located in front of residents’ rooms. A caregiver support group serves residents’ family members as well as the outside community.

The life force of this facility is seen in its secure memory garden, where pathways and colorful flowers and plants create an Edenic scene. The grounds were designed to enhance the mature trees that predate the garden. A lovely picnic grove is well-used. Posted menus keep residents informed of the upcoming meal choices. Both dining rooms overlook the garden. Assigned seating divides residents into two groups: one for those who can eat independently, the other for those who require assistance. During our tour, staff and residents chatted happily. Like a well-tended but varied garden, a symbiotic relationship has formed between management and staff; each works alongside the other to maintain a fruitful balance for residents.
