Shore Hill Apartments

Trimmed shrubs outline the entrance of the senior apartment complex that is home to Seniors in Touch. Located on Shore Road, the facility faces a lush expanse overlooking New York Bay. The lobby blends rich greens with teal and salmon. Floor lamps and incandescent fixtures highlight the framed artwork adorning the walls. A lovely mural entitled “Brooklyn in the Eye of The Beholder,” which celebrates Brooklyn’s diversity and various landmarks, is displayed in the lobby; the piece is a collaboration between participants and art students of Fort Hamilton High School. Oversized windows bathe the space in natural light; participants’ arts and crafts projects, including an impressive papier-m?ch? falcon, are showcased in every corner.Seniors in Touch offers an outstanding activity schedule and art program. One staff member, who is an artist, organizes group activities that introduce participants to different art mediums. Staff and volunteers strolled around the room as participants worked on their drawings and paintings. Recently, the program received a grant that funded a Native American art project. Participants wove baskets out of reeds, dried flowers and beads. Several lucky artists had their baskets displayed in Manhattan’s Pfizer Building and City Hall. Other activity mainstays include singing, tai chi, yoga, table games, puzzles, bowling and even horseshoes! A volunteer from the Brooklyn Public Library leads monthly word and memory exercises as well as a reminiscence group. The occasional apple-picking outings and field trips to museums, botanical gardens, Staten Island ferry and Rockefeller Center are highly anticipated by all. The program boasts a private library in addition to an enclosed patio. Seniors in Touch accommodates a small group of participants, only eight to twelve a day, which means that the staff members are able to give plenty of one-on-one attention.
