Forty acres of undeveloped land surrounds the campus at the Phoebe Richlandtown Health Care Center, which is encircled by several outdoor patios. Rocking chairs and a comfortable swing sway on the covered porch that looks out onto the street. As we toured, we noted the absolute pleasantness of the staff and residents; staff really seemed to enjoy their work. The facility is run by the United Church of Christ, a faith-based organization, and this is a very large draw for most potential residents.
An upcoming remodel promises improvements to both the aesthetic qualities of the interior and the structural layout of the building. Inside, residents’ rooms were inviting due to their spaciousness; most back walls are consumed by windows that bring in a bit of the outdoors. Rooms are furnished with beds, but otherwise a resident’s personality is visible in the rest of the décor. The Cottage, the secured dementia unit, has been architecturally designed for sensory enrichment, and is both spacious and easy to navigate. Cathedral ceilings foster a light-infused quality to these residents’ rooms. The secure courtyard allows residents the freedom to come and go as they please. The main dining room also moonlights as a multipurpose area. Bright green lawns and gardens can be viewed by residents if they dine near the large windows. A few private tables add a cozy factor. The brand-new courtyard features stone paths that wind around the well-tended gardens. A gazebo acts as shelter from the sun during warm weather spells.

The activity program is very rich and the amount of volunteers from the outside community here borders on a flood. Activities in the dementia unit are geared toward a memory-impaired population. In-house events and trips occur regularly. Services provided for a fee include visits by a dentist, podiatrist and ophthalmologist.
