Intergenerational programs at Pembrooke allow residents to be influential and inspirational in the lives of young people. Residents have pen pals from a local elementary school and also spend time with special-needs students from the nearby Devereaux School. As most Pembrooke residents are long-term, these important relationships with the children often stand the test of time.
The three-story facility sits back from a busy road, and is just moments from downtown West Chester. Minimal landscaping allows the building itself to take center stage, with a large wooden deck on the street side connected via stairway to a smaller wooden deck off the second story. Residents and families use these outdoor spots only for planned programming. Benches near the covered main entrance at the building’s rear provide a lovely resting spot.

The main entrance opens to a small reception area with a few paintings and dried flower arrangements. The wallpaper on the first two floors is bright and sunny, creating a clean look against the new hardwood and linoleum flooring. Each floor has its own spacious common room and separate dining room, which residents also use for activities. At the time of our tour, Hawaiian-themed décor in the nursing stations and common rooms reflected the spirit of Luau Month. Most resident rooms are semiprivate. The third floor is designated for dementia residents. These residents may access the outside areas with supervision, and can enjoy indoor murals of pleasant outdoor settings at any time of day. Some residents like to be creative in the small activity room, which contains dolls, an ironing board, a typewriter and an old-fashioned sewing machine.
