Mission Villa, located in a quiet and sunny section of eastern Daly City, specializes in providing skilled ser vices to individuals with dementia. The two-story rectangular stucco building was designed to provide a physical environment conducive to the specialized care required for this specific population. Those who need or wish to walk extensively can circumnavigate the building via the spacious hallways. Sitting areas are strategically placed for resting. There is an excellent staff-to patient ratio of 1 to 6 for early-stage dementia and 1 to 4 for residents with advanced dementia. The facility’s perimeter, secured for residents’ safety, is done so in such an unobtrusive way that it is hardly noticeable.
The color scheme of the apartments, which combines attractive greens and pastel colors, provides a restful and neutral setting, into which residents and their family members can introduce more personal effects.
The management believes that family involvement is essential; a number of programs are offered to support their ongoing involvement. Some of these services include a monthly support group, counseling ser vices, and training through the Alzheimer’s Association. Residents’ families are encouraged to visit as often as possible, and to share meals with their loved one. There are several private areas specifically for this purpose. Mission Villa emphasizes community through participation in group activities such as arts and crafts, music, tai chi and movies. Staff members often lead small group tours of the neighborhood, using the facility van.
