Heartland is conveniently located less than a mile from various restaurants and shopping centers, off of Highway 183. The impressive pentagon-shaped building, reminiscent of an old schoolhouse, neighbors a newly built playground, where we observed many children playing. Residents gather in the well-furnished lobby. The rich green carpeting, complemented by cream-colored sofas, Victorian chairs, wooden tables and porcelain decorations, creates an altogether homey atmosphere.
Residents’ rooms are spacious enough to accommodate a queen-size bed and two accent pieces. The dining room doubles as an activity space. Residents often gather in the common area that boasts the best view of the playground. For outdoor leisure, residents get plenty of fresh air and sunlight in the courtyard. They stroll the crisscrossing garden paths, lounge under the shade of maple trees or rest on benches that line the lush grassy area. A few of the residents have personalized the garden with their own potted ferns and flowers. Soft fluorescent lighting prevails throughout the building. Maroon berber carpeting lines the wide hallways of the building. Residents keep decorative tables outside their doors to showcase seasonal decorations. One resident dresses a porcelain duck in the appropriate seasonal garb.

Management and staff emphasize efficiency without compromising the quality of care. Although the staff was busy tending to residents’ needs on our visit, they were always smiling and pleasant.
