A bubbling fountain greets visitors to Autumn Leaves, a building of stone, crimson brick and red tile. Native Texan shrubs border the walkway to the facility. Multiple windows line the foyer, which features a vaulted ceiling and a fireplace. Lamps brighten the sitting areas and sconces light the wide hallways, which are lined with handrails. Themed “neighborhoods” divide the building. The carpet and wallpaper echo the themes, as do knickknacks in each neighborhood’s atrium. Beds and nightstands furnish residents’ rooms.
The staff throws a big party every month to celebrate residents’ birthdays. Residents also enjoy visiting pet day and therapeutic music hours. The scent of vanilla filled the home during our tour, as several residents baked cookies while others relaxed in front of the TV. A group of residents barbecued in the center courtyard in celebration of Day of the Dead. Two large patios flank the house.
Healthful offerings such as apples and oranges comprise the snacks. The chefs prepare simple meals such as turkey, mashed potatoes and sugar-free cherry pie. Some staff members serve meals; others provide feeding assistance. We noted staff closely monitoring residents who tend to wander. Despite their busy schedules, they engaged in cheerful conversations with residents. Even the owner took the time to say hello and chat with us!
