Alterra Sterling House residents enjoy a packed calendar of diverse activities that includes aromatherapy, bingo, movie nights, poetry recitals, religious services, spelling bees and performances by musical guests. When we arrived for our tour, a group of residents had gathered for an outing—the air buzzed with excitement! Residents and staff interact in a comfortable, friendly manner. Staff members were quick to wish each resident a good day or offer assistance. A number of residents took advantage of the agreeable weather by gardening or relaxing outside. The building’s exterior is a sturdy combination of stone, brick and wood. We observed residents socializing throughout the common areas, which are attractively decorated with a mix of solid and floral patterns. Tasteful window treatments and paintings of landscapes and flowers beautify the rooms. Meals are served restaurant-style in the dining room, where dark wooden tables and chairs host residents. The menu lists hearty meals such as chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. Residents enjoy alternate options at each meal as well as snacks throughout the day. Expansive windows and brass and glass fixtures spread light throughout the home. Handrails offer support in the expansive hallways, which are ornamented with vases and landscapes. Residents’ personalities are stamped on their rooms, which feature neutral-colored walls and carpets that accommodate a variety of personal styles.
