Avalon Memory Care – Sparrows Point

Avalon Sparrows Point is an upscale Alzheimer’s facility that provides care for all stages of dementia. The staff works as a team to harbor a comforting environment. The large home sits on a calm tree-lined street in a safe neighborhood. The luxurious interior décor brings to mind a five-star hotel. The walls are painted in shades of mocha. Attractive artwork and contemporary furnishings add to the elegant ambience. Several residents were relaxing on the overstuffed sofas and chairs in the common areas when we visited. Although there was a large TV and entertainment center, we noticed that they were not being used, as residents preferred to socialize instead—a touching glimpse of the familial environment at Sparrow’s Point.

The staff regularly performs room checks and are generally very attentive to residents. Residents are encouraged to decorate their own rooms, which are large and tidy, with plenty of space for personal items and lots of natural light. Multiple overhead fixtures throughout the facility produce bright lighting. There are no hallways; one spacious walkway leads to the rear of the facility.

Fruit, cookies, coffee and tea are daily snacks. A resident was helping prepare “Special Stew,” a favorite meal at the facility, during our visit. Residents often relax on the patio, where they enjoy the trees, plants and flowers. There are weekly field trips to shopping malls, and daily activities may include game hour, exercise and cookie socials.
